DID Direct Inward Dialing/ DDI

Direct inward dialing (DID), also called direct dial-in (DDI) in some parts of the world, is a service offered by local telephone companies to connect the PSTN to a customers’ private branch exchange (PBX) system.   To reach users with VoIP phones, DID numbers are connected to a SIP gateway that is physically connected to both the public switched telephone network and the Internet. The gateway routes and translates calls between the two networks for the VoIP user. Calls originating in the VoIP network will appear to users on the PSTN as originating from one of the assigned DID numbers. Since the VoIP systems are not necessarily located in the same geographic area as the DID gateway, they are often referred to as virtual DIDs.
